One of the most resourceful ways of making long lasting business connections is via networking. But I see a big difference in online networking versus offline networking.

Perhaps this is the reason online networking is not as effective as offline networking.

I have engaged in, as host and participant in many networking events, such as business card parties, church networking events, open house events and so on. For the most part people take a moment to introduce themselves and find out a little about the other party. Then they exchange cards. If they can use one or the others' service, they follow up after the meeting to get a business deal going. If not, they pass the referral information on to someone who may be able to use the service or products. Never the less, they stay in touch and meet again at other events. For me, this has been one of the most successful and enjoyable business activities which has given me lifetime friendships, invaluable connections, as well as some of my best clients.

I have met more seasoned professionals and learned a great deal about eloquence, grace, style, and the classy way business can be done.

Online, on the other hand, there seems to be no - networking - no getting to know the other person or conversation to see what the other person has to market. Its all about what "self" has to market. Before "hellos" are exchanged people start trying to sell their stuff, So it has become a great turn off. We should understand, everyone cannot buy our products, but everyone has something for someone. So, I think we should take a little more time to find out who is who, to be effective in net working online. I see it as sort of hit and run, lazy type of no target marketing. So, take the time to know some of the marvelous people we meet, who knows, someone may have the door opened that you are looking for. I am new here and hope you will come by and meet me. I may have a door for you, or you may have one for me. Let's find out.

I am going to Set up a Networking Group - I hope you take the time to join and let's exchange -vcards.

Thank You

Moiko

I agree with you wholeheartedly Moika. There is so much information out there on the net about networking online it's surprising how much opportunity there is for improvement. At the same time, the people on the net who are at least making an attempt to move forward in their businesses I have to applaud and encourage.

I think those who are serious about their business will seek out training and education about networking in general and especially online networking.

It's been less than a year since I myself discovered I was doing things all wrong online even though I was spending enormous amounts of time and money at it. Only after I said to myself, "Stop! This is not what I call success!", did I begin to seriously seek information about marketing online.

I would suggest to everyone reading this try this one free resource: Renegade University

They teach "Attraction Marketing" or you may have heard about Web 2.0 Marketing which is the same thing. It may be free but you'll be surprised at how much information you can get on the net for free. The difference is this is one of those things that are actually of value.

Just click on the above link and you'll be taken to the sign-up page for your free account. There are three major sections that teach, among other things, social marketing which is also referred to as networking online.

Moiko,

I echo your sentiments! That's why I created SiS in Success "Professional" Networking.

But I've learned within the almost year it's been established, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.

SiS has now almost 2000 members on 10 networks on Ning and I would venture to guess when I roll out the plan I'll only have about 50 or 60 TRUE participants.

If you haven't already, feel free to join the group on this site and within the coming months I know we can work together to bring a true sense of professionalism to this thing we call Networking.

I'm committed to the process,

Are you kidding? I have read some of the finest blogs and writing;the most entertaining, and extremely informative blogs right here on IseeColor. There are almost [if not more than ] 100,000 members from all walks of life, yet the ones I have met have been good writers. So, to say they are "unable to communicate" in this fashion online is not the case. I just signed up, noone knows me; I haven't invited a lot of people yet, so, in time the right people will find me and reply. What I have is of no interest to Most people so far.

I think your advise is wonderful, and I appreciate it. But, I can't blame it on the talented intelligent people here, I have to blame it on me.

Thanks JaWar

Greetings Moiko,

Many people are not skilled in the art of communicating through the written word and often find themselves unable to communicate in this fashion online. I often suggest to people to post three to five specific ways they are able to help someone else and vice versa(sp). In this format it makes it a bit easier for people to communicate.

Additionally, I've found that having a great deal of content in various formats is a good way for people to know you and may lead to increased business. Having a number of blogs, videos, articles and social networking profiles has helped me secure greater Motivational Speaking Engagements and clients to consult. That's my two sense (cents). lol
