The Senate unveils its $849 billion health care bill

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid unveiled the Senate health care bill yesterday.

The bill would expand health insurance coverage to 94% of Americans (31 million more people) at an estimated cost of $849 billion over 10 years. The proposal would reduce the federal deficit by $127 billion over the next 10 years and by more than $600 billion in the following decade.

The Senate bill makes it clear that no federal funds could be used to pay for abortion, but at least one plan within the exchange would have to offer abortion coverage women can pay for and one plan would not.

The proposal drafted from two separate bills approved by Senate committees now goes to the full Senate for debate, hopefully as early as this weekend.

Judge rules that the Army Corps’ negligence caused the Katrina flooding

A federal court ruled that the Army Corps of Engineers' negligence led to catastrophic flooding during Hurricane Katrina. They failed to properly maintain a shipping channel linking New Orleans to the Gulf of Mexico.

The ruling stated:
"For over 40 years, the Corps was aware that the Reach II levee protecting the Lower Ninth Ward was going to be compromised by the continued deterioration…The Corps had an opportunity to take actions and failed to do so. Clearly, the expression 'talk is cheap' applies here."

The ruling was issued in a lawsuit brought by 6 plaintiffs affected by the 2005 hurricane, who claimed the Corps of Engineers was liable for damages. The judge awarded 4 plaintiffs, from the Lower 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish, damages ranging from $100,000 to $317,000. The ruling applies not only to the plaintiffs, but to 100,000 homes and businesses in the Lower 9th Ward; they too will be entitled to compensation.

‘Executed’ Son in Michigan Allegedly Had Sex with 3-year-old Sister

The 37-year-old Detroit-area man who allegedly shot his 15-year-old son execution-style in a vacant lot was irate that the boy had had sex with his 3-year-old sister.

Highland Park Police filed first-degree murder charges against Jamar Pinkney Sr. yesterday, saying he marched his son, Jamar Jr., to an open lot, made him strip naked and shot him point-blank. The boy's mother, Lazette Cherry, said her son told her he had improper sexual contact with the girl; she then called his father.

Jamar Sr. arrived at the home with a gun and ordered his son to strip. Jamar Sr.’s lawyer said prosecutors should consider evidence of the father's state of mind over the sex abuse report. Jamar Sr., who's also charged with assault, was ordered to be jailed without bond until a preliminary examination Dec. 1.

The son was apparently very emotionally disturbed and by admitting that he sexually abused a his 3-year old baby sister, he was crying out for help. Nothing could undo what the boy did and I would be so irate that 1st thought would probably be to handle it just the way that the dad did, but serving the rest of your life in jail is not the answer. Now the father is going to be separated from his young daughter for several years of her life whereas he could have gotten the son some help, even gone so far as to make sure there were never, ever any unsupervised moments between the siblings until the daughter reached adulthood.

It sounds good when you say it, but when you think about it, this man is in jail, likely to go to prison for a long period of time. His 3 year old daughter, won't have her father's support and presence in her life. I get wanting to beat him down, but executing him, that's excessive, unless there was some repeated pattern of behavior. If this teen confessed to mama, then he knew it was wrong and likely wanted to do right, unfortunately he won't get a chance.

I don't think it matters at all that the boy admitted improperly touching the child. The dad went too far and I'm certain the boy's mother wouldn't have called his dad and say what she said had she known dad would become judge, jury and executioner. The mom reportedly told the dad the issue had to be dealt with and not "swept under the rug". But in no way was she saying strip him and kill him. I can't agree that executing your own child to keep the world from calling your child a "monster" is a justification to murder your kid.
Vengence is mine, sayeth the Lord. Remember that and fight for the perpertrator and the victim to get the help they need to never be a victim or perpertrator again. Especially when the victim and the perpertrator are your own kids.

no matter what he did to her, he took that step and did it to his little sister. and i understand BTMP that you have your opinion, but i also have mine. i'm sorry i would do it, that's why whomever knows me and how i think they would keep me away from the person who messes with my children. i would rather put my children down than to have the world do it for me and look at me like a bad mother. i'd hurt or kill whoever hurts my children, even if it's my other child. Period

@cycy in no way do I agree with your comments that it was right for the Father to shoot his son like a rabid dog. Yes what the boy did was terrible but obviously the boy was seeking help for his problem by telling his mother what he had done. How do we know the boy himself had not been a victim of sexual abuse. To many unknowns here and what constitutes "rape". I am sure if a three year old was "raped" there would be bleeding and tearing that the mother would or should have noticed without having to be told. It leaves you to wonder if there was just inappropriate touching etc;.

Again, what the boy did was terribly wrong and I can understand the father being terribly upset, but he took it to far in killing the boy. I could probably go with a beating to within an inch of his life, but to kill your own child as if he were a dog? Wonder where the boy picked up his behavior from, was he a victim, did he know something the father did not want to come out? To many unknowns for me and since the boy is now dead, we may never know all the circumstances.

Based on the little bit of information given here, If I were on this jury , I would more than likely vote not guilty by reason of temporary insanity if that were a plea option, but it was still wrong for him to kill his son.

I'm sorry, but I would do the same thing. Better a parent who loves the child take the child out than having a world that will hate the child and call the child a monster take the child out

I knew before even opening this post I knew this was going to come into play. Family, its a sad state of affairs when things like this happen. I wonder if there were any warning signs, tendencies, etc...?
