Judge who refused interracial marriage resigns

A Louisiana justice of the peace who refused to marry a couple because the bride was white and groom was black resigned Tuesday.

Keith Bardwell, who is white, quit the post with a one-sentence statement to Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne and no explanation of his decision: "I do hereby resign the office of Justice of the Peace for the Eighth Ward of Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, effective November 3, 2009."

Bardwell refused to perform the ceremony for Beth Humphrey and Terence McKay because they are of different races.

When questioned about his refusal, Bardwell acknowledged he routinely recuses himself from marrying interracial couples because he believes such marriages cause harm to the couples' children. In interviews, he said he refers such couples to other justices of the peace, who then perform the ceremony, which happened in this case.

Humphrey has said she and McKay received their marriage license from the parish clerk of court, where they also received a list of people qualified to perform the ceremony. When she called Bardwell's office to ask about the ceremony on Oct. 6, Humphrey said Bardwell's wife told her that the justice wouldn't sign their marriage license because they were a "mixed couple."

Bardwell didn't immediately return a call for comment Tuesday about his resignation, which followed calls for his ouster from several public officials, including Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu.

Humphrey and McKay have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Bardwell.

4 More Bodies Found at Cleveland Rapist’s Home

A convicted Cleveland rapist was charged with multiple murders on Tuesday after police dug up 4 more corpses at his home, bringing the count to 10.

In Anthony Sowell’s home, 4 bodies were found in the back yard, while 6 others were discovered elsewhere on the property, including in the basement of the house. A skull wrapped in a paper bag in a bucket could be an eleventh victim. 5 of the victims were black women who had been strangled, according to the coroner.

Sowell, 50, has been denied bond and will remain in custody.

Seventh Arrest Made in California Teen's Gang Rape

A seventh suspect was arrested in the brutal gang rape of a 15-year-old girl outside her homecoming dance last month.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, is being held in lieu of $1.2 million bail and is being interrogated by police. The individual's arrest warrant alleges rape in concert, sexual battery and penetration with a foreign object in concert.

Richmond Police have now arrested seven people in connection with the assault, but have only six in custody. Salvador Rodriquez, 21, was released from custody late last week due to "insufficient evidence”.

Even with the latest arrest, more suspects are being sought out in connection to the case.

Some people in this world are really sick. What if that was your sister, niece, cousin or some other family friend. Would you have sat by and watched this go on. I don't think so.

The sickest then that I heard in my life was the incident in Richmond. Come on people, how in the hell can you watch a person get gang rape and post it on your my space or you tube like that was a source of entertainment. Where in the hell is the common sense in theses people! Not only it wasn't right but very immoral to do. I hope every single person that was involved serve some hard times and a very strict punishment. The parents of those individuals should be very embarrassed about this. We going to have to step our game up on this one.

The convicted Cleveland rapist is a very sick man. He does not even LOOK sane to me. My question is, how did he go so long without getting caught? Maybe the spirit within him that enabled to do such heinous acts kept him covered....

As for the judge...who the hell does he think he is to say a man and a woman cant marry bc of their race? As far as I know there are no laws preventing this. He did us a favor by resigning.

This serial rapist/murderer..OMG what can I say except God will have wrath on his soul and thank God he was caught!

I see our Cleveland, OH news about the House of Horror has made national headlines. This is the worse serial killer I have ever witnessed in Cleveland, Ohio - now it is a total of 10 bodies found on his property. I hope this bring closure to some of those who were reported missing.

These remnants from the past, are dwindling away into dust. They will eventually become completely extinct, and the world will become a better place.
