82nd Academy Awards: Mo'Nique Wins for Best Supporting Actress!

Mo'Nique became the fifth black woman to win an acting Oscar, 70 years after Hattie McDaniel won the same honor for "Gone With the Wind" — the first Academy Award ever given to a black performer.

The 42-year-old standup comedian portrayed an abusive mother in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."

"I want to thank Miss Hattie McDaniel for enduring all she had to so that I would not have to," Mo'Nique said in accepting the Oscar.

Mo'Nique, who has insisted on being considered a standup, not an actress, was asked backstage if she still feels that way.

"I am a standup comedian who won an Oscar," she said, laughing. "Oh, baby, that tickled me."

She noted that her outfit evoked McDaniel, who also wore a blue dress and a gardenia in her hair the night she received her award.

"For you Miss Hattie McDaniel," she said. "I feel you all over me and it's about time that the world feels you all over them."

Other winners included:
* Kathryn Bigelow for the best-director for her Iraq War thriller "The Hurt Locker."

Bigelow is the first woman in the 82-year history of the Oscars to earn Hollywood's top prize for filmmakers.

* Sandra Bullock as best actress for "The Blind Side";
* Jeff Bridges as best actor for "Crazy Heart";
* and Christoph Waltz as supporting actor for "Inglourious Basterds."

What did you think about the Academy Awards?

Was there someone who should have won, but didn't?

I am proud of Monique and think it's great but why does it seem that black actors have to portray a very negative character before they win an Oscar such as Denzel Washington's case. Does society enjoy seeing us in such negative roles?

Congratulations to Monique, but I don’t see what’s the big deal about her winning an Oscar. Yes she played her role to a T and she did deserve to win, however why is this the highlight of the show??? I think the Oscar’s are boring and a lot of people only tuned in just to see if Monique or any of the cast from Precious would win that night. However, Monique was not the first black or black woman to win an Oscar so I’m like acknowledge and honor her but I just don’t get why it’s such BIG TALK when other black people have won before her, that’s just my opinion.

Precious hit home for a lot of young women...she said what many of us...ME INCLUDED...can't say! I didn't cry during the movie because it was a life I grew to know and as I became an adult, I grew cold and strong and it's hard for me to trust anyone. Thank you to Gabby and thank you to Mo'Nique for keeping it REAL! Haters...get off your asses and help the young women who are living this hurt and abuse and anguish daily! Don't think this is NOT happening in America--regardless of skin color--because it DOES!

I'm listening to various talk radio shows today and a lot of us are tearing MoNique down for her Oscar. People saying that she played every stereotype of the Black community with her role. All I have to say is, SHE IS AN ACTOR. She played a role. Does she think that this is the way the Black community is? I think she knows better. This role transcends race and economic class. It shed light on these issues. Whites makes movies that have shows many facets of their race and culture and also that transcends races. Do you hear them the very next day telling Sandra Bullock, that she shouldn't played that woman. C'mon. We are so quick to tear each other down. I don;t know anyone personally in the situation that was portrayed in the film, so I know it aint just a black thing. To all the critics, stop talking and start making your own movies that show "us" in the light you want us too. We have our problems and we need to work on them not perpetuate things. Congrats Mo.

Mo'Nique did an outstanding job in Precious. I have always loved Mo'Nique, but if she'd been near me after I watch Precious, I probably would have hit her. She made me hate the person...much like Denzel did with Training Day. Absolutely outstanding performances when a well known and very likable entertainer can make their greatest fans hate the person they portray in the film. BRAVO!!!!
